My favourite bird by far is the ruby-throated hummingbird. They arrive at our feeders mid-May and stay generally until mid September. I spend many happy hours during that time watching and photographing these delicate creatures and one of their behaviours made me curious. At first glance I thought that they were itchng themselves but after researching these little guys realized that they were indeed preening themselves. I learned that hummingbirds have the highest density of feathers of any bird, exposing very little skin and thereby providing excellent insulation. To keep their plumage in good condition, they preen themselves often. Now when I see them doing this I know exactly what they are doing.
I'm busy working on my blog posts. Watch this space!
